Online dating: blunders happen

A year ago I wrote a thesis on internet dating communication, specifically on self presentation, self disclosure and online relationship formation within a South African context.

Needless to say I read thousands of profiles, analized every imaginable dating website and interviewed my fair share of people.

I still love getting feedback. I love the humorous ones! Here is an excerpt of an email received from an interviewee today:

She was “curvaceous…” you know. Her profile said “average”. The pictures must have been old or taken and edited by a professional. She had body odour. Awful!

She was also running late [because she worked late). So I told her to take her time, shower and get ready. She said: “No, I’ll come as I am”. I sent a sms “Mint in die bek, Dior in die nek.” Jokingly – with a bit of seriousness to it. She didn’t bother with the mint or the deo…

Aaklig. Ek se vir jou.

So if you considering internet dating – think carefully. You need to approach it correctly and be prepared for a couple of surprises along the way.
