Chris Chameleon at the Barnyard

I have never grasped the uber-fan / groupie / throw-thong-on-stage thing. Just like I don’t get the excitement of having a celeb signature on your underwear or having a celeb scribble on a random piece of paper, even worse stalking a celeb in a book store – then again, I’m a fruitloop of different sorts.

Anyhow if ever I had to pick a gig or artist to be a groupie for or had to turn into a thong-throwing kinda girl, it would be for a Chris Chameleon show. After more than a year of trying to get tickets (boy they sell out fast) for one of his performances, my parents got tickets to his show at the Barnyard in Mossel Bay.

What a way to start my holiday, I drove through from Cape Town like a demon to make the show ;-) and boy was it worth it. A mind-blowing experience. I am officially a bigger fan of the phenomenally talented [single?] man.

I have listened to Chris Chameleon CD’s from the time I started commuting between Cape Town and George and I have never grown tired of it. Granted that I can listen to the same song on replay for an hour (every time you play a song you pick up something new, it’s like studying a book). Perhaps my fascination has something to do with the fact that every time a CD  was released it reflected my mood, experience and/or outlook. I do believe that there is something for everybody in his music – it’s easy to relate to it.

I was impressed by his presence and the show. Chris is off-beat, quirky, possesses a naughty streak and a very appealing boyish charm. His dynamic and colourful personality oozes sexiness and sensuality. He has mind-blowing voice control and perfect pitch – and one must appreciate precision. His songs/lyrics reflect a sharp and clever use of language. Wordplay does make the heart beat faster…

His awareness of his audience and his willingness to interact with them afterwards scored major points in my books. The little boy that peeped up at him from the side of the stage didn’t go unnoticed – he winked playfully at him in the show and dedicated a song to him at the end. It had me giggling. Never before have I encountered an artist who was at the door when the people left – to chat and interact with them. It was refreshing to experience a renowned artist that is not only uber-talented but both sincere and humble.

I left the show inspired. Proud to be South African.

PS. My quote/song-line that I took home the evening: “ Does she like me? I’m sure she’d like to know the price” What can I say – it just stuck with me. Maybe it’s because I come at a price ;-) But then again, don’t we all?

  1. Hi Bev! Have you got the Made Available CD yet? Have listened to some of the tracks and they’re awesome – takes me back to the old Boo! days (R.I.P.)
