Gifts – somethings just work

It’s that time of the year again – silly season! A time of year marked by greedy retailers,  increased consumer expenditure (caused by the amount of crap they buy that won’t be used in January) and lavish festivities.

I use to own a corporate and promotional gifting company. A really strange thing to own – I have no interest in gifting.  My gift-giving knack extends to friends and family only – and even then they shouldn’t expect gift wrap. Although corporate gift-giving and promotional items remain a mystery to me I did learn one thing about gifts: creative gift giving is often a recipe for disaster.

While a self-powered radio (at the bargain price of R488.60)  might sound fun, the recipient’s fascination with the item will closely resemble that of a toddler. Once the novelty has worn off it will be left in a drawer and forgotten. I believe that gifts that appear to be boring are the ones that get the job done.

Herewith my list of easy-to-find and highly recommended gifts. Suitable for a friend, loved-one or client:

  1. Gift hampers. Lots of little things…yummy!
  2. Body Shop products. Everybody loves it.
  3. Whiskey/Wine. There is simply nothing like a good whisky or a fine wine.
  4. Chocolate. The expensive kind…
  5. Books. At least if they don’t like it, it’s a recyclable gift.
  6. Plants. You’ll always be top of mind when the plant needs water.
  7. Experience gifts. Think spa or golfing voucher…mmm…
  8. If all else fails, I don’t know anybody that isn’t in need of time. Buy someone time.

Before you start getting creative, wasting time on Amazon.com or wondering around a shopping mall aimlessly – head for the things you know will work.
