Would you own an Electricity Monitor?
In South Africa cheap electricity is a thing of the past – a 31.3% increase in tariffs by Eskom has ensured that South Africans have felt it in their pockets. Although this is tragic in one sense, it is making consumers more aware of the concept of saving electricity.
The biggest problem for most South Africans is the fact that the electricity bill only stares at you once a month. You generally have no idea what your consumption is like until the bill arrives. By that time it is too late to reduce consumption.
Enter – the Electricity Monitor – a device that allows you to monitor your consumption when you embark on becoming energy efficient. The device allows you to systematically monitor, test and go about reducing the amount of electricity you consume. Using wireless technology with a transmitter installed in the electrical distribution board allows you to place the device anywhere in the house. It’s that little thing in the house that reminds you to turn off lights, turn off extra devices and use energy efficient bulbs. Nifty indeed.
With prices ranging from R800 – R1300, I’m curious to know, would you own one?

I would consider owning one. With water & lights bills seemingly increasing monthly it can only be a good idea to get a handle on where you’re wasting power.
I had a question about installation as I don’t have any exposed wiring around my meter and distribution board that I could attach the sensor to. I’ve sent a message via the contact form on the web site and hopefully they will add this to their FAQ as I think the setup I have is pretty standard in South African homes built since the 1970s.

Thanks for the response Steve.
An off the topic rant – I miss the days where comments on blogs were “the thing”. The freakin micro blogging fashion has just made blog comments a thing of the past.
